Title: A Hidden Epidemic: Alcohol and Opioid Use and Abuse by Adults 50 Plus
Date: Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Duration: 1 hour
An increasing number of adults 50 and over who use alcohol or other drugs are at greater risk for addiction because of metabolic changes, increased stressors, grief issues, loss of identity/dreams, chronic pain, other health issues or a loss of independence. Substance use problems in this population have been historically underestimated, and a new emerging epidemic is opioid use and abuse. Studies show that while the growing impact of opioids is having a strong effect on all ages, it’s especially deadly for the older population. While overdoses have nearly quadrupled overall since 2000, for people age 55 and older the increase is seven to eight times greater. Because symptoms in this population can mimic common medical and aging concerns, they are often misdiagnosed, and even when they seek treatment, they may not be properly treated.
